How much does it cost to paint a car?
Repainting a single panel costs $300 to $1,000. A full-car respray is $1,000 to $3,500 for a basic single-stage job, $3,500 to $8,000 for a quality standard repaint with proper prep, and $8,000 to $20,000+ for show-quality or exotic finishes.
Most paint work after damage is a spot or panel repair with a blend into neighboring panels, not a full respray. The big price swing on a whole car is almost entirely prep and paint quality, not the paint itself.
Cost breakdown
| Repair | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spot repair / touch-in | $150 – $500 | Small area |
| Repaint one panel (blended) | $300 – $1,000 | Door, fender, hood |
| Repaint several panels | $1,000 – $3,500 | One side / quarter of car |
| Basic full respray | $1,000 – $3,500 | Minimal prep, same color |
| Standard quality full respray | $3,500 – $8,000 | Proper prep + clear coat |
| Show / exotic / color change | $8,000 – $20,000+ | Full disassembly |
What affects the cost
Prep work
Sanding, dent and rust repair, masking, and priming are most of the labor. A cheap respray skips prep and does not last.
Paint type
Single-stage enamel is cheapest; base-coat/clear-coat, metallic, pearl, and matte finishes cost more in material and time.
Color change
Switching colors means painting door jambs, under the hood, trunk edges, and inside panels — far more labor than a same-color job.
Disassembly
Removing trim, glass, handles, and lights gives a clean result but adds hours; taping around them is cheaper and lower quality.
Body condition
Existing dents, rust, and old repairs must be sorted first or they telegraph through the new paint.
Panel repair or full respray?
After an accident, a panel repaint blended into adjacent panels is the normal fix and the color will match if the shop does it right.
A full respray only makes sense for widespread clear-coat failure, a color change, or a restoration — and cheap full resprays often look worse within a couple of years.
Insurance pays for paint as part of a covered repair (blend panels included), but not for repainting a car because the factory paint has aged.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to repaint one panel?
A single door, fender, or hood is $300–$1,000 including the blend into neighboring panels. Metallic and pearl colors sit at the higher end.
Why are full respray quotes so different?
A $1,500 respray is a quick scuff-and-shoot; an $8,000 one includes stripping trim, fixing bodywork, multiple primer and clear coats, and wet sanding. You are paying for prep and durability.
Will a new panel match my faded paint?
A good painter blends the new color into the surrounding panels so it matches the car as it looks now, not the original factory shade.
Does repainting a car reduce its value?
A professional repaint after damage is neutral to slightly positive. A cheap, obvious respray or evidence of hidden rust repair reduces value.
How long does a car repaint take?
A single panel is one to three days. A quality full respray is one to three weeks depending on bodywork and disassembly.
